Dutch companies hiring migrants from outside the EU without permits could be hit with higher fines, reports the NL Times, citing the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. The Netherlands Labour Authority can now issue fines rising to €11,250 with effect from February. Previously, the highest possible fine was €8,000.

A higher fine can occur when, in addition to illegal labour, there are also bad working conditions for the labour migrants, like underpayment or bad housing. This would only concern violations that employees make purposely.

“Many abuses are caused by fraudulent employment agencies and their hirers who have created a business model of underpaying workers and offering substandard housing,” Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, Eddy van Hijum said.
