US voters weighed in on Nov. 5 in the presidential election.
Former President Donald Trump has defeated Vice President Kamala Harris and been declared the winner of the 2024 presidential race.
President-elect Trump will affect policy for the next four years. He retakes the White House with ambitious plans for broad import tariffs, immigration restrictions and additional tax cuts that analysts see delivering a short-term boost to the economy but also larger budget deficits, weaker workforce growth and higher inflation, according to U.S. News and World Report.
In addition, it appears that the Republican party will also control the Senate, although control of the House of Representatives has yet to be decided.
Top issues in this year’s election — the economy, immigration and inflation — all touch on recruiting. Andrew Flowers, chief economist at programmatic job advertising provider Appcast, discussed the potential impact of the election in these three areas in a nonpartisan webcast in October.
In addition, 45% of job seekers say the US presidential election will have either a minor or major impact their careers, according to a survey by Aerotek, a division of Allegis Group. The survey included 1,677 job seekers in the US.
This year’s election has also been heated. A separate survey by Zety, a provider of résumé services to job candidates, found that 75% of respondents were considering finding new employment because of the political environment in their workplace. This poll included 1,102 respondents.
The presidential race wasn’t the only issue on ballots across the country. Massachusetts voters weighed in on whether to give independent contractor drivers for companies such as Uber and Lyft the right to unionize. That measure is on the brink of passing, with “yes” votes leading 54% to 46% of 6:45 a.m. Eastern Standard Time Wednesday with 88% of the vote counted, MassLive reported.
