Australia’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate steady at 4%

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Australia stood at 4.0% in December 2024, steady when compared to December 2023, according to research from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose by 0.1% from 3.9% in November 2024.

Overall, the number of unemployed persons stood at 604,100, up 3.3% compared to the prior year and up 1.7% compared to the month prior.

At the same time, the number of employed persons stood at 604,100, up 3.3% over the year and up 0.4% over the month.

“The number of employed people grew by 0.4% in December 2024, slightly higher than the average monthly rise of 0.3% during 2024. It was also higher than the average monthly population growth of 0.2% over the year,” Bjorn Jarvis, ABS head of labour statistics said in a press release.

Australia’s labour force participation rate stood at 67.1% in December, up 0.5% over the year and 0.2% over the month.

“The employment-to-population ratio rose 0.1% to a new record of 64.5%. This was 0.5% higher than a year ago and 2.3% higher than before the COVID-19 pandemic,” Jarvis said.

At the same time, monthly hours worked in all jobs totalled 1.97 billion, an increase of 3.2% over the year and 0.5% over the month.

On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate in Australia for December stood at 4.0%, no change on the month and up 0.1% over the year.
