Australia’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate rises to 6.5% in June

Australia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 6.5% in June 2024, up 0.5% over the year but unchanged over the prior month, according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Further data showed that there were 608,200 unemployed persons in June 2024, up 95,800 over the year but up 9,700 over the month.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the number of employed persons stood at 14,406,100 in June, up from 14,355,900 in May (an increase of 50,200). When compared to the same period a year ago, the number of employed persons increased by 388,400.

The labour force participation rate stood at 66.8% in June, on a seasonally adjusted basis. This was up 0.2% over the year and unchanged over the month.

On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate stood at 4.0% in June, up 0.4% on the day and unchanged over the month.

Meanwhile, monthly hours worked stood at 1.96 billion in June on a seasonally adjusted basis, up 1.4% over the year and up 0.8% over the month.

On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, in June 2024, the employment-to-population ratio remained at 64.1%. The employment-to-population ratio provides a measure of employment relative to the size of the population.
