Allied health professionals, including radiology technologists and therapists, can generate millions of dollars annually for their facilities, according to survey data released by healthcare staffing firm AMN Healthcare Services (NYSE: AMN).
Cath lab technologists, who provide assistance during cardiac procedures and operate defibrillators and other equipment, generate the highest net annual revenue, according to AMN’s data. They generate an average of more than $2.8 million per year, equating to $237,375 a month and $54,778 a week after deducting contingent labor costs.
“It is well known in the healthcare industry that physicians generate revenue through the services they provide, but allied healthcare professionals also can be significant contributors to the bottom line,” Michael Dennis, president of AMN Healthcare’s Allied Staffing Solutions division, said in a press release. “Far from being a cost, they are an important, revenue-driving asset.”
Vascular sonographers rank second in revenue generation, averaging net revenue of $1.37 million per year, according to AMN’s data. They are followed by nuclear medicine technologists at $1.28 million; radiation therapists at $1 million; and general radiology technologists, who primarily take X-rays, with average net revenue of $0.63 million.
Dennis noted that in addition to direct revenue, allied radiology professionals also generate considerable indirect revenue.
“Without allied radiology professionals to take diagnostic images such as X-rays, MRIs, CAT scans and others, radiologists would be unable to do their jobs,” Dennis said. “The revenue that radiologists generate can be lost or decreased when allied radiology professionals are either unavailable or in short supply.”
The report is derived from a national database of annual billing generated by several allied healthcare professionals, less the daily cost of staffing contingent allied healthcare professionals based on prevalent rates. Data referenced was accessed and compiled by AMN Healthcare’s Revenue Cycle Solutions division.
