The Birmingham, Alabama, metro area had the lowest unemployment rate among all large US metro areas in June at 2.7%, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The Hartford, Connecticut, metro area had the second-lowest at 2.8%.
Large metro areas with the highest unemployment rates in June were Chicago and Las Vegas at 6.2% each.
The BLS defines a large metro area as having a population of 1 million or more. Among metro areas of all sizes, the Burlington, Vermont, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, metro areas tied for the lowest jobless rates at 1.9% each. The next-lowest occurred in Portsmouth, which includes parts of New Hampshire and Maine, and the Rapid City, South Dakota, area at 2.1% each.
El Centro, California, logged the highest unemployment rate among all metro areas in June at 16.4%.
