A majority of technical and professional workers, 71%, plan to look for a new job within the next 12 months, according to staffing firm Bartech’s 2025 What Candidates Want report. Looking at a shorter timeframe, it also found 57% plan to seek a new role within the next six months.
Workers are planning to move on even though 51% are satisfied with their current positions, the research found. Only 22% are dissatisfied.
Bartech’s data is based on a survey of 570 North American engineers, technical and professional workers. It took place in the fourth quarter of 2024.
“With hiring having slowed over the past 18 months, it’s not surprising people are anxious and ready for change,” Erica Leone, senior VP of Bartech Staffing, said in a press release. “What is notable is that most people we surveyed are satisfied with their current job, but, as we’ve seen in the past, there is interest in roles that are more financially and intellectually rewarding.”
The top reason for seeking a new role was the desire for higher pay, which was cited by 76%. That was followed by better work-life balance, 59%; and seeking to advance their careers, 50%.
Workers ages 55 and up were most likely to be seeking a new job at 76%.
Job Boards
When seeking new employment, online job boards were cited as the first place to check by 57% of workers. Social media came next at 21%. Company websites were cited by 9%.
Among candidates ages 25 to 54, the survey found that 26% prefer social media. That drops to 12% for candidates ages 55 to 65.
Other findings in the report included:
- When being first contacted by recruiters, 55% of candidates prefer email, while 16% prefer phone. Text and LinkedIn were cited by 12% each.
- When asked how the recruitment process can improve, 66% responded by saying enhanced quality and speed and communication. Only 6% want enhanced DE&I candidate selection.
- When researching potential employers, 26% rely on employee reviews, 25% prioritize company culture and values, and 15% consider the company’s financial health.
