The trend of working from home is gradually changing, with 61% of US companies now implementing a formal policy that requires a minimum number of in-office days per week, according to WTW.

Reasons behind the move include the belief that face-to-face interactions boost employee engagement within teams, cited by 84%; strengthen corporate culture, 71%; and increase collective productivity, 64%.

Still, WTW cautioned that a lack of a clear structure around designated office days would hinder progress on improved team collaboration.

“Reviewing the total rewards package and seeking employee feedback are essential steps to ensure alignment with needs and expectations while considering realistic changes that will motivate employees to return to the office,” Russ Wakelin, senior director, rewards data, intelligence at WTW, said in a press release.

Meanwhile, employees remain interested in remote work. Research by WTW found that 53% of employees that have work that can be done remotely would look to change jobs within 12 months if their employer mandated a full-time return-to-office policy. In addition, 48% of hybrid and remote workers would be willing to take a pay cut of 8% on average in order to work flexibly.

“Organizations must take a holistic look at the entirety of the employee experience to truly make hybrid working effective and to meet the needs of employees and employers,” Jill Havely, managing director, employee experience at WTW, said in a press release. “This includes looking at the work environment, talent and reward programs and policies, leader and manager effectiveness, and culture.”

WTW’s research is based on a survey conducted in September of 308 respondents working at midsize and large private-sector employers in the US as well as a survey of 10,000 US employees and midsize and large employers that was conducted from January to March.
