Digital platforms such as TikTok and Instagram have become vital career resources for the modern workforce in 2025, according to a survey released Feb. 11 by career website Zety.

The poll of 896 US Generation Z employees found that social media has also become an important hiring channel, with 64% securing a job or internship via Instagram, 56% through X (formerly Twitter) and 46% through TikTok.

The study defines Gen Zers as individuals born between 1997 and 2012.

TikTok, in particular, has emerged as a dominant platform for career trends, with 92% of Gen Zers trusting the platform for career advice. However, 55% admit they’ve followed misleading guidance on the platform.

While young workers prioritize social media over traditional tools — 76% use Instagram for career advice and content and 52% turn to TikTok — only 34% use LinkedIn.

Additionally, 48% of Gen Zers strongly agree that social media promotes unrealistic career growth and success expectations.

The survey noted that a company’s online presence significantly influences Gen Z workers, with 95% saying it impacts their decision to apply. More than half, 62%, cited highlighting company achievements as the type of content that would increase their likelihood of applying, followed by workplace culture, 61%; employee day-in-the-life videos, 50%; DE&I initiatives, 48%; and job openings, 43%.

The survey was conducted on Jan. 14.
