In 2015, a cohort of doctors and technologists found themselves at a crossroads, confronted by the challenges of an outdated, disorganized and slow healthcare staffing system.

This system stood in stark contrast to the streamlined processes that had become commonplace in the modern era. The evident divergence sparked an idea that championed the creation of Nomad Heath, a tech-driven digital platform for healthcare staffing.

“Nomad’s inception stemmed from necessity. In a world where online operations are the norm, the fact that it took me a staggering 10 months to secure a temporary locum tenens job to work on the weekends was a revelation,” says Nomad Health founder and CEO Alexi Nazem, who is also a medical doctor.

“That was a clear sign that healthcare staffing was due for a major transformation - one that could boost efficiency, speed things up and deliver a quality experience altogether,” he says. Simultaneously, Nazem aimed to amplify compensation for technicians while driving down costs.

“It was a vision grounded in fairness and practicality,” he says. Today, Nomad Heath stands tall. With 300,000 clinicians on board, it operates across all 50 states and employs more than 500 people.

Justin Lambert, the president and COO of pioneering digital platform Nomad Health, says the firm has redefined the conventions of healthcare staffing.

One of the keys to the company’s success lies in its ethos of transparency and automation, he says. Nomad Health has established a mutually beneficial ecosystem by cultivating an open marketplace where clinicians explore job opportunities and facilities review candidates freely.

“It’s a win-win situation for all,” Nazem says. “We’ve taken processes that used to eat up time and streamlined them with automation, from job matching to candidate qualification and offer generation.”

Lambert adds this innovative approach has addressed a critical need for healthcare institutions.

“The healthcare staffing industry was yearning for faster, simpler and more economical ways to find jobs or hire temporary clinicians to fill critical shortages in their workforce. With a transparent path to jobs, enhanced remuneration and comprehensive support, Nomad Health has effectively filled that void by replacing the traditional recruiter model,” Lambert says.

As Nomad Health charts its course forward, Nazem envisions it expanding into new markets, continuous features enhancement and an unwavering commitment to automation and user experience. “We entered the allied healthcare space two years ago, and there’s much more to come,” he says.

Looking beyond Nomad, Nazem pictures a broader industry transformation. With technology as a driving force, he foresees a shift leading to fewer staffing agencies, a notable consolidation of the market.

“Where there are currently 1,000 to 2,000 staffing agencies, the number is bound to reduce in the years ahead. Eventually, only a few large platforms will thrive, infusing the industry with renewed vitality and purpose,” he says.
