MedPro Healthcare Staffing, which has been dedicated to delivering healthcare staffing solutions since it was founded in 1983, has been thriving, ranking on SIA’s Fastest-Growing US Staffing Firms list in each of the last five years.
The Sunrise, Florida-based firm has flourished by providing a variety of offerings: a traditional travel program for nurses and allied technicians; a workforce management offering for healthcare facilities; and a long-term, international placement program that brings health professionals from other countries to staff hospitals in the US.
A Long-Term Commitment
Only a handful of healthcare staffing providers offer both domestic and foreign-educated healthcare recruitment, notes MedPro CEO Liz Tonkin. “The barrier to entry is high for the international segment,” she says. For example, some countries, such as the Philippines, ask placement firms to apply for and get preapproval before recruiting there. Additionally, international recruiting requires a significant time commitment. MedPro and a potential placement might work together for three or four years from the moment they meet to the day the nurse or medical technologist arrives in the US.
MedPro sources nurses and medical technologists primarily from other English-speaking regions such as Kenya, the Philippines, Jamaica, the Caribbean islands, Canada, Australia and the Middle East. “People come here for a better life,” says Tonkin, herself a registered nurse. “Some of them have waited for years to come. Their families have scraped and saved to give them an education.” Nurses sourced by MedPro are the equivalent of an RN and have an average of seven years of experience when they arrive in the US.
Employee Growth
Another factor in MedPro’s success is its employee environment, which fosters employee growth and development, Tonkin says. “We’re all in the office,” she says. “We believe in building the culture and learning from each other in person.”
Some of that learning happens at a six-month program where MedPro works to prepare employees for leadership positions. The program is working with its third cohort; seven participants from earlier groups have been promoted into management. Overall, 55% of MedPro employees have been promoted within the company, and a third of the firm’s workers come from referrals.
Though the company is serious about work, its people also find time for play. Stacey Edwards, MedPro’s senior VP of talent and marketing, says that the company holds a philosophy of “happy employees, happy customers.” Thus, the organization mixes fun into its work environment, including holding a monthly raffle to win prizes worth a total of $5,000. “This year’s theme is centered around pop-culture,” focusing on retro music and television, she says. Weekly activities include art, trivia contests, jam sessions and karaoke. Participants earn points that translate into raffle entries. MedPro also sponsors weekly raffles based on production and team performance, giving away an additional $5,000 to $10,000 every week.
The staff attend a professional sporting event every quarter, bringing their families and enjoying a reception before the game. Employees and their families also take an annual trip together.
Community Connection
MedPro also puts an emphasis on community involvement. Every Thanksgiving, employees help put on and run in the Fort Lauderdale Turkey Trot, which raises $150,000 for charity, and staff participate weekly in Cocktails for Charity, which might raise around $2,500 a month for a charity that the employees select. Sometimes that charity is Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Broward County, with which MedPro has an ongoing relationship. A two-year cohort of little brothers and sisters comes to MedPro’s office once a month to receive mentoring around life after high school from about 35 MedPro employees.
In addition to giving back locally, MedPro also has a global charity, MedPro International Global Giving, which is just beginning. It donates money, books and/or supplies to nursing education programs, starting with the Philippines. “We want to give to communities where we source nurses,” Edwards says.
As the healthcare industry continues to evolve, MedPro is gearing up for an exciting future filled with opportunities for growth and innovation, Tonkin shares. With a focus on adaptability and service quality, the company is ready to meet the ever-changing needs of healthcare facilities and professionals. As she looks ahead, Tonkin is confident in MedPro’s ability to drive positive change and make a lasting impact in the healthcare community.
