Conexus MedStaff has been in business for 30 years, but they didn’t start in healthcare. They started in the oil and gas industry. “Basically, an opportunity came up for us [in 2010] to diversify into healthcare … We felt it was a great opportunity to move into a different sector,” CEO Andrew Moreton says.

Conexus MedStaff brings in nurses and medical technologists from around the globe to the US, finding them work and providing them assistance to relocate. They provide support through the entire journey, with a highly specialized in-house team helping them with education, immigration, visas and green cards. “A lot of our internal staff has actually gone through the journey that our nurses will go through - the immigration side and other areas - so I think we really relate to our nurses,” Moreton says.

The support that Conexus provides is invaluable to nurses who are leaving their home countries and coming to the United States to begin or continue their career.

Moreton also attributes their growth and success to the investment in people on the business side of the house, their understanding of the US market and the global market, and their understanding of international staffing.

Culture is definitely a factor in Conexus’ growth. “Our culture is very important to us,” says Cathy Vollmer, VP of operations. “We’re about people, we’re about passion, we’re about family, we’re about gratitude, we’re about community.”

While Covid-19 did have an impact on Conexus’ overall growth, they were able to grow their US team by more than 50% last year, with 95% of those team members being hired during the pandemic.

During the pandemic, leadership kept their team engaged and connected with Zoom calls and Microsoft Teams meetings. They make sure if someone needs help or a pick-me-up, they are there to support them. “Everyone feels really, really proud to be working in the healthcare space … to be supporting our nurses, our superheroes in scrubs,” Moreton adds. “It’s a really rewarding business to be in.”

Moreton is also considering the burnout that many nurses are feeling due to the demand of healthcare professionals during the Covid-19 crisis. As the dust settles from the pandemic, clients are looking for longer-term staffing solutions, which Conexus can provide.

In addition to organic growth and diversification, Moreton says Conexus is open to acquisition opportunities if a company is the right fit. They’re also working on enhancing the experience of their nurses and clients. “Education is really fundamental to the vision that we have. And we really want to create a personalized journey for all of our healthcare professionals,” he says.

“It’s about keeping nurses in nursing … We don’t want to just prepare them for the position they are walking into, but positions they’re going to be going into in the future,” Vollmer adds.
