Angela Alberty
Honoree Profile
As a millennial, daughter of an immigrant and co-founder of a tech company, Angela Alberty (she/her) is determined to do her part to create pathways to economic security for women, moms and other people who are undervalued or unfairly shut out of good jobs. “There is so much talent that is missed,” she says, pointing to the impacts of bias, rigidity in the ways jobs are structured and a lack of support for people who have to overcome major barriers to not just access jobs but hold onto them.
Alberty started “at home” with her company, myBasePay, for which she serves as chief business officer. From the beginning — the company was founded in early 2021 — the leadership has lived by their values. For example, they removed common requirements from job descriptions like “college degree” or “office experience,” which exclude entire groups of talented and motivated people. As a result, the fast-growing company’s internal staff is majority diverse, majority female and majority working mothers. In Alberty’s words, “My greatest accomplishment is the makeup of the myBasePay team.”
The generation coming into the workforce looks at things differently. Companies that do not prioritize DE&I will be left behind.
The company’s products were also intentionally created to make an impact on diversity, equity and inclusion within the workforce solutions ecosystem. Motivated by research showing that contingent and freelance workers typically live paycheck to paycheck and without health and PTO benefits — factors that directly impact people’s quality of life and overall well-being —myBasePay offers tools tailored to the needs of this population, such as standardized paid time off, major medical options and 401(k).
Outside of myBasePay, Alberty is making good on her pledge to uplift others through her presence on social media, her frequent public speaking engagements and her podcast work focused on exploring topics like DE&I best practices and the ways women overcome common professional roadblocks. In association with organizations like Glider AI and Omni Inclusive, the team at myBasePay has contributed to scholarship funds that improve access to educational and employment opportunities for underrepresented groups, and they are exploring ways to similarly impact low-income communities in Latin America.
Asked how she responds to the idea that DE&I work is a trend, Alberty’s position is clear. “The generation coming into the workforce looks at things differently,” she says. “Those companies that do not prioritize DE&I will be left behind. It’s that simple.”
