Mark Spiezio
honoree profile
Beginning in 2022, Mark Spiezio has led the transformation and expansion of Caterpillar’s contingent workforce program, transitioning two of four program countries to new vendor management systems and laying the groundwork for expanding the contingent worker program across at least 10 new countries.
Much of Spiezio’s time is devoted to interacting with internal customers around the company’s staff augmentation program, working with outside vendors and an external managed service provider that runs the daily practicalities of the staffing program. Engineering and information technology are the biggest areas that use contingent workers within Caterpillar, though the company also hires for accounting and procurement.
An approachable leader, Spiezio makes time to meet with recruiting teams. “What are their issues? Is my program creating pain or good things for them?” he asks. “If I can make a minor change in my program that makes recruiters’ lives easier, that’s good to know. We can’t always make the changes they ask for, but unless we know, we’re not able to make them at all.”
