Trust, teamwork and good times help make this firm a best place to work

“I’ve never dreaded a Monday morning drive to work since GetMed opened.” Kristi Hamilton, the medical travel company’s senior vice president of operations, voices a sentiment shared by other employees of the Omaha, Nebraska-based firm. A blend of fun and unshakeable professional support has helped make GetMed Staffing a best place to work, they say.

The medical travel company partners with hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics and urgent care to provide temporary registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants. Its allied professionals division staffs temporary technicians, physical and occupational therapists, radiology technicians and lab professionals.

The company helps medical facilities meet their legally mandated nurse/patient ratios, a difficult task during the ongoing nursing shortage. GetMed places traveling staff members for stints that range from eight weeks to nine months or more, the latter often in rural, understaffed facilities.

Hamilton was the first hire to join GetMed’s team after owners Sue Dennis, Steve Dennis and Linda Hotchkiss founded the firm in 2018. She oversees IT services, marketing efforts and the company’s compliance team. Hamilton says that she greatly values the firm’s commitment to offer all its workers integrity, transparency and support.

“This is a company that values your opinion, values you as a person, will help develop and support you, and will always be honest with you,” she explains. “The company promises workers that they will always know where they stand. I feel that this feedback is important.”

Teams address any conflicts when they happen so they can improve and move on quickly. They share ideas as well as trust and respect for one another, Hamilton says, adding that she appreciates the diversity they bring to the organization. “The team has a lot of different backgrounds,” she notes. “Some have worked for other medical travel agencies, which gives them extra perspective on what works well and what doesn’t.”

Not every interaction that GetMed employees have with potential placements is positive. When recruiters or client managers have an unpleasant interaction, Hamilton says, she takes comfort in knowing that they have a strong, supportive team around them.

But, she adds, not every connection is serious, either. “This is a fun culture with high energy and lots of laughter!”

Building Community

Brett Klug echoes with Hamilton’s sentiments. A GetMed client manager who joined the firm in July 2021, Klug works with recruiters and client facilities, seeking out opportunities for traveling clinicians. He appreciates that his job lets him find the right people to add value to professional situations. “We’re not putting cogs into a system,” he says.

Klug describes himself as an inherently positive person, someone who looks for the best from situations. He was the firm’s seventh or eighth hire, moving from a job at a managed services provider that worked with GetMed. “The relationship I built helped draw me in,” he says, adding that GetMed’s values around integrity and optimism cemented the deal.

Klug appreciates the company’s efforts to build community. An open-floor working environment helps encourage collaboration, and it’s normal to discuss both work and personal lives, a balance that helps create friendship. “People here aren’t pitted against each other,” Klug says. “They cheer for each other, both being supported and giving support.”

Social events are another part of the company’s fun, friendly culture, with taco-eating contests, pop-up boutiques and celebrations for birthdays and work anniversaries. Klug recalls an ice cream social where his son met Hotchkiss, saying later that “she has the best energy.” Many employees dress up and bring their children in for Halloween. In 2023, Klug was Batwoman. He dressed as a football player in 2022.

GetMed pays Klug fairly, he says, but “honestly, other things are more motivating. It’s great to be happy with what I do, to be energized and supported by the people I’m around. We’ve built that as a team and as an organization.”

Bosses Who Listen

GetMed’s fun, supportive environment is a major draw for new employees, but it’s just one of the reasons Lauren Webster joined the company in May 2023. A nursing recruiter, Webster enjoys talking with clinicians and getting to know them as both professionals and people.

Webster came to GetMed from a healthcare system as an operating room nurse and felt unsupported and unheard by leadership.

At GetMed, by contrast, she says the leadership is top notch. “The CEO will do anything to help us as recruiters: make phone calls, market our nurses,” she says. “We all support each other — I really think ‘supportive’ is the best word to describe GetMed. They listen to my suggestions and notice and praise my hard work.”

Webster says that GetMed is a good fit for her, and that shows in every part of her life. “My husband thinks I have never been happier.”
