Gerry Altamirano

Workplace Diversity Senior Manager | AMN Healthcare

honoree profile

Gerry Altamirano entered the staffing industry to dismantle entrenched workplace biases and barriers, ensuring equitable access to meaningful career opportunities for all.

“Often, it’s not intentional — people simply don’t know any better. When we know better, we do better,” he explains. “I have always been extremely passionate about addressing issues that hinder individuals from securing the right job that celebrates their diverse skills and experiences.”

As senior program manager for workplace diversity at AMN Healthcare, Altamirano spearheads the healthcare staffing provider’s corporate DE&I strategy, including overseeing its 10 employee resource groups. Over the past year, his initiatives have brought ERG participation to 44% from 39%. Altamirano also led the organization to orchestrate more than 100 events and programs, both virtual and in person, enhancing team members’ sense of belonging.

Among his achievements was launching the DE&I foundations course at AMN, for which he developed the curriculum. The course educates individuals about bias, the presence of different identities in the workplace and the impact of diverse perspectives. Additionally, Altamirano had several speaking engagements, including at a workshop with the American Staffing Association’s IDEA Council on workplace neurodiversity and accessibility.

Looking ahead, Altamirano plans to amplify his dissemination of DE&I knowledge, speak at more events and intentionally build connections to ensure people continue to receive the best care. “What’s the impact of having inadequate staffing, especially in healthcare? It means people don’t receive the care they need,” he says. “For me, it’s more than just a job — it’s my calling. Helping facilitate opportunities for connection for the people who fill critical roles in our industry is what drives me forward.”
