Allan Njoroge

Founder and CEO | Actriv Healthcare

honoree profile

Allan Njoroge’s eyes first opened to challenges in the healthcare system during his time spent as a patient in the hospital. That led to deeper conversations with nurses and caregivers in his own family. “They were unhappy with staffing challenges,” he recalls. “They said, ‘There are so many problems, but we really love it and don’t want to leave.’” From that point, he was “obsessed with understanding healthcare and its limitations.”

The result: Njoroge founded Actriv Healthcare in 2017 with the goal of leveraging technology to connect nurses with available hours to local healthcare facilities. While enabling hospitals to help patients, Njoroge also wanted to give nurses more freedom, flexibility, stability and the chance to earn extra income.

Actriv has grown significantly, even during the recent turbulent years for staffing companies. Njoroge oversaw 50% revenue growth in 2023 while expanding services to Minnesota and drafting a “road map” for more states that they intend to head into. He highlights Actriv landing on the 2023 Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America — for the third year in a row — as a key achievement.

With Njoroge’s sharp focus on looming retirements among an aging healthcare workforce, Actriv is developing new products that will incorporate a greater use of AI and human voice prompts. He also hints at a new solution that “will revolutionize how healthcare systems manage their workforce while also taking into account the needs of patients.”

“What keeps me up at night is the need to accelerate innovations and start making things better,” he says. “We need to move fast — we have less than 10 years to get to meaningful solutions.”
