There are mixed sentiments among US tech professionals regarding the economy and future tech growth, according to a survey released Sept. 19 by job board Dice, a division of DHI Group (NYSE: DHX).

While three in 10 tech professionals expressed optimism about next year’s economic conditions, a nearly equal proportion reported pessimism, according to the survey.

On the other hand, long-term tech growth expectations are high, with eight in 10 tech professionals anticipating growth in the tech industry over the next five years. In addition, the survey found that 70% of tech professionals see an increase in tech hiring, particularly in AI and machine learning.

The survey noted that these mixed sentiments likely reflect a turbulent year marked by widespread layoffs and wavering tech job openings. Concerns about company stability were pronounced among 36% of tech professionals at companies with less than 500 employees.

“While the industry has faced significant challenges, tech professionals are adapting by upskilling and actively seeking new opportunities,” Dice CEO Art Zeile said in a press release. “The demand for professionals with expertise in AI, machine learning, cybersecurity and data science remains strong, and tech professionals are optimistic about the future. With that optimism, they continue to prioritize companies that align with their values, offer meaningful work and provide the benefits that matter most to them.”

The Q2 2024 Technology Professionals Sentiment Survey, conducted between June 5 and June 27, includes responses from 520 fully employed US technology professionals.
