Employer sanctions to remain in effect

February 20, 2008

Arizona's employer sanctions law will remain in effect for now. A federal judge ruled against an injunction to block the law while the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals weighs its legality, The Arizona Republic newspaper reported today. The law goes after illegal workers by targeting employers, who could lose their business licenses under the law if caught employing illegal workers more than once. The law also requires workers to use the federal E-Verify program.

The Arizona Contractors Association Inc., the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and others sued to stop the law. Businesses' concerns include the extra cost and time of complying with the law and concerns over the accuracy of E-Verify. However, a judge ruled in favor of the law in an earlier decision.
