IT worker confidence dips

April 16, 2008

Confidence among U.S. information technology workers fell in the first quarter, according to the IT employee confidence index released by Technisource. The gauge fell 8.6 points to 47.4 in the quarter, the index's lowest reading since it began in 2005.

The number of tech workers who believe the economy is getting weaker rose to 69% in the first quarter, up 17 percentage points from the fourth quarter of 2007. In addition, 55% of tech workers said there were fewer jobs in the first quarter, up 20 percentage points from the previous quarter.

"It is not surprising to see this dip in IT worker confidence given the current state of the economy," said Technisource President Michael Winwood. The sub-prime mortgage woes are weighing on workers as are two H-1B visa bills being debated in Congress, Winwood said, although demand for tech workers continues.

Technisource is a division of Spherion Corp. (NYSE: SFN).
