Metro areas surpass Silicon Valley in tech job growth

The number of technology jobs rose more quickly in Boston than Silicon Valley in August, according to the new “SMBeat” report by TriNet, a professional employer organization. Other metro areas with faster job growth than Silicon Valley included New York, Atlanta and the Denver-Boulder area.

Tech jobs in the San Francisco Bay Area, home to Silicon Valley, rose by 1.12 percent in August, according to the report. In Boston, the number of tech jobs rose by 2.47 percent.

Here’s how the areas stack up:

  • Boston, up 2.47 percent
  • Atlanta, up 2.37 percent
  • New York metropolitan area, up 2.07 percent
  • Denver-Boulder, up 1.52 percent
  • San Francisco, up 1.12 percent

Still, it paid to be in the San Francisco Bay Area where the average tech salary was $117,000. The average salary in the next-highest area was Denver-Boulder where it stood at $100,000.
