European IT temporary staffing market estimated at $17.7 billion

Our recently released report β€œThe Global Staffing Industry 2013” provides our estimate of the size of the global temporary staffing market (based on 2013 revenue), cut by region and major occupational segment, including IT. One of the many items noted in the report is that we estimate the European IT temporary staffing market generated $17.7 billion of revenue in 2013. After many IT Staffing Report articles that have focused on the US market, this article takes a closer look at Europe.

It is notable IT makes up a smaller share of the European temporary staffing market (13 percent) than it does for the US market (23 percent). In Europe, unlike in the US, a majority of temporary staffing revenue is generated from commercial staffing (industrial and office/clerical).

Nevertheless, there are pockets of growth in the European IT staffing market. E-commerce/m-commerce industries are reporting pressing needs for experienced project managers. New skill sets appearing in these markets include user experience designers (UXD), which incorporate the technical skills of a user interface designer with an understanding of marketing and sales strategies. Other IT skill sets trending favorably in Europe are security experts, social media architects and cloud computing specialists.

We estimate that more than two-thirds of European IT staffing revenue is generated in three countries (the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands). However, some of the smaller markets seem to offer strong growth prospects. There is more demand from the IT services industry and the oil and gas sector in the Scandinavian countries and IT outsourcing is driving growth in Central and Eastern European markets such as Poland and the Czech Republic. We estimate that Adecco is the largest provider of IT staffing in Europe, followed by Hays.
