Portugal low on IT pros

Hays Portugal’s recent IT report 2013 highlighted a shortage in the number of domestic information technology professionals with 78 percent of employers surveyed reporting that there was a shortage of qualified professionals in the IT sector.

This shortage is attributed, in part, to the incentives for young professionals to work abroad, particularly over the last two years. Fifty-eight percent of employers, however, felt that most candidates had a lack of experience. One in five employers also cited the decreasing number of IT graduates. Forty-two percent reported that the degrees offered by universities did not prepare the graduates for working life.

IT professionals most in demand are analyst programmers, followed by programmers, project managers and solutions architects.

Nearly half of all IT companies in the survey (42 percent) reported that they intend to hire programmers before the end of 2013. Only 14 percent of companies surveyed have no intention of recruiting in 2013.
