Report ranks best hospitals

U.S News & World Report ranked Johns Hopkins Hospital No. 1 on its 24th annual Best Hospitals rankings. The publication announced the rankings on July 16.

Johns Hopkins held the No. 1 spot from 1991 through 2011. It lost last year to Massachusetts General Hospital, which ranks No. 2 this year. The Mayo Clinic ranks No. 3.

U.S. News ranks up to 50 hospitals in each of 16 medical specialties. Just 147 out of nearly 5,000 U.S. hospitals earned national ranking in one or more specialty.

“Patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other objective data largely determined the rankings in most specialties,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News health rankings editor.
