New jobs emerge as healthcare industry transforms, survey finds

New clinical and leadership jobs that didn’t exist a decade ago are emerging from the transformation of the US healthcare system, according to a survey of 323 clinical and HR leaders from US healthcare organizations released by AMN Healthcare Inc. (NYSE: AHS).

New clinical roles being seen are care coordinator, navigator, health coach, medical scribe and telehealth-trained practitioner.

Respondents also cited new leadership roles, including chief population health officer, chief experience officer, chief clinical transformation officer and chief strategy officer.

Also, respondents cited new technical roles, including clinical documentation specialist and ICD-10 Coder.

Planning for new roles was strongest for ICD-10 Coders, with 44 percent of respondents saying they are currently recruiting or planning to recruit for this position, which is critical to proper documentation and reimbursement for the mandated change from ICD-9 to ICD-10.

The survey responses also reflect significant demand for care coordinators, with 41 percent currently recruiting or planning to recruit for the position.

“Healthcare is the most dynamic employment sector in the country, not only in job growth but now also in the emergence of new types of jobs,” said Susan Salka, president, CEO and director of AMN Healthcare. “High demand for healthcare professionals will continue for the foreseeable future. This survey suggests that healthcare providers will need help in preparing for it.”
