Crowdsourcing takes on healthcare

CrowdMed, a provider of crowdsourced medical diagnoses, will use CrowdFlower’s online crowdsourced staffing platform, according to an announcement by CrowdFlower on Aug. 1.

CrowdMed allows users to fill out an online patient questionnaire that includes symptoms, medical history, family medical history and other information. That data will then go out to an online crowd that includes both medical and nonmedical personnel, who contribute diagnoses. The user ultimately receives a list of possible diagnoses that he or she can go over with a doctor.

Members of the crowd receive points, allowing them to receive recognition, according to CrowdMed’s website. The can also earn real-world money for a medical nonprofit.

Crowdsourcing typically involves taking large, data-heavy tasks and breaking them down into micro tasks, which are then sent out to numerous online workers to complete. It can also involve competitions
