Benchmarks: U.S. Program Management Spend

By our estimates, total spend in the United States under management through a VMS, an MSP, or both, was $53 billion in 2009. Spend under management is defined as the approximate number of dollars that were actually invoiced by suppliers for work performed during 2009 in the United States. VMS suppliers transacted a total of $49 billion in the United States in 2009. Of this total, $30 billion (61 percent) was in conjunction with an MSP. MSP suppliers transacted a total of $34 billion in the United States in 2009. Of this total, $30 billion (88 percent) was in conjunction with a VMS. On a global basis, we estimate total VMS/MSP spend is more than $63 billion.
