Unemployment claims rise by 12,000

In the week ended Dec. 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 346,000, an increase of 12,000, or 3.6%, from the previous week's revised figure of 334,000. The four-week moving average was 343,000, an increase of 4,250 from the previous week's revised average of 338,750.
In the most recent state numbers, for the week ended Dec. 8, Illinois experienced the largest increase in initial unemployment claims, up 4,230. The state cited layoffs in the construction and service industries. New York registered the largest decrease in initial unemployment claims, down 9,272. New York reported fewer layoffs in the construction, service, and transportation industries.
