US – IT Jobs at All-Time High, but Growth Slows

July 16 2012

U.S. information technology employment reached an all-time high in June for the sixth month in a row, but the rate of growth slowed from previous months, according to the TechServe Alliance’s IT employment index for June.

The number of IT jobs rose by 1,500 in June for total employment of almost 4.2 million, according to the TechServe Alliance’s index. However, the number of IT jobs in June is up only 0.04 percent compared to May — a slower rate than the previous months. The index had recorded monthly increases of 0.4 percent each in March, April and May.

“I would be careful about reading too much into the decline in the rate of growth in a single month,” said TechServe CEO Mark Roberts. “Given the dynamic nature of the labor market for IT professionals, there will be an inevitable ebb and flow of monthly numbers. Based on the longer-term trend line as well as the anecdotal reports of my member companies, demand for IT professionals remains strong.”

On a year-over-year basis, the growth rate held up. The number of IT jobs rose by 2.9 percent year-over-year in June. That’s above May’s 2.7 percent year-over-year growth. It's even with April's year-over-year growth of 2.9 percent.
