The New Orleans area registered the lowest jobless rate in May, 3.3%, among U.S. metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday. Detroit posted the highest jobless rate among large metropolitan areas in May at 8.9%.
Idaho Falls ID had the lowest unemployment rate among metropolitan areas of all sizes in May at 1.9%. The area with the highest unemployment rate in May was El Centro CA at 19.2%.
Overall, 328 of the 369 metropolitan areas reported higher unemployment rates in May than a year earlier, 30 had lower and rates were unchanged in 11.
