Mass layoffs rise by 82

The number of mass layoff actions rose by 82 in September for a total of 1,271, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of initial unemployment claims associated with mass layoff actions rose 5,536 to 123,656. A mass layoff action involves at least 50 workers from a single workplace.

The industry with the most initial unemployment claims from mass layoff actions was motion picture and video production.
