Job openings relatively flat

The number of job openings on the last business day of January inched up slightly to 3.7 million from 3.6 million in December, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The job openings rate — a measure of job openings compared with total employment — was 2.7 percent, up from 2.6 percent in December.

The number of hires rose 1.2 percent to 4.2 million in January from the previous month, and the number of separations inched up 1.0 percent to approximately 4.1 million.
