Canadian jobless rate drops to new low

The Canadian unemployment rate fell to a new 33-year low of 5.8% in October, Statistics Canada reported today. Employment rose by 63,000 in October, up 0.4% from September.

Ontario's unemployment rate fell to 6.0% in October from 6.2% in September. The province added more than 32,000 jobs in October, mainly in part-time work, according to Statistics Canada. The growth was mainly in public administration and other services. The growth in public administration came as the provincial election was taking place.

Alberta continued to have the lowest jobless rate among all provinces at 3.4%. Manitoba had the second-lowest rate at 4.0%. The highest was in Newfoundland and Labrador at 13.5%.
