IT, engineering jobs post ‘modest’ growth in September

IT and engineering jobs rose in September, but the pace of growth was modest, the TechServe Alliance reported.

US jobs in IT edged up 0.1 percent in September from August to a total of approximately 4.69 million, according to the TechServe Alliance. The number was up 3.6 percent on a year-over-year basis.

The number of engineering jobs in the US also rose 0.1 percent month over month in September to about 2.51 million. The number was up 1.5 percent on a year-over-year basis.

“While there is still very much a shortage of professionals with high-demand skill sets, the overall growth rate for IT and engineering jobs remained modest in September,” said TechServe Alliance CEO Mark Roberts. “This slower rate of growth was further confirmed by a downward revision in the engineering index for August.”

“While we are not on the torrid pace of adding IT and engineering jobs like earlier in the year, I remain very bullish on the future prospects for strong growth in these two sectors in both the medium-term and long-term,” he said.

The TechServe Alliance is a trade association of the IT and engineering staffing and solutions industry.
