Softchoice, Wipro deals among public M&A

Here are recent publicly announced mergers & acquisitions of IT services firms. Today’s announcement includes deals involving Softchoice Corp. (TSX: SO) going private, Wipro Ltd. (NYSE: WIT) acquiring a big data firm.

Softchoice Corp. to go private

Softchoice Corp. (TSX: SO), a Toronto-based information technology services firm, announced April 22 that it struck a deal to be acquired by Birch Hill Equity Partners for C$20 per share, representing total equity value of C$412 million.

The deal is subject to shareholder and regulatory approval.

Softchoice has more than 1,200 employees, and it serve organizations in the U.S. and Canada.

Wipro invests $30 million in big data firm

Wipro Ltd. (NYSE: WIT) is investing $30 million to take a minority stake in Opera Solutions LLC, a big data science firm. The action also includes a strategic partnership.

Opera Solutions uses big data to provide predictive and prescriptive analytics to business and governments. It has 700 employees, approximately 200 of which are machine learning scientists The company applies machine learning to extract predictive patterns or data flows in big data.

Wipro announced the deal on May 7. Opera is privately held and based in Jersey City, N.J., with offices in North America, Europe and Asia.

“This strategic partnership with Opera Solutions will help us further extend our leadership to the big data analytics space, as it combines Opera Solutions’ machine learning expertise, pre-discovered predictive signals and algorithms with Wipro’s proven domain and technology expertise combined with global delivery model to create industry-specific big data analytics solutions,” said K.R. Sanjiv, senior vice president and global head, analytics and information management, at Wipro.

Alabama healthcare information management providers merge

HIM Connections Inc., a recruitment and staffing firm specializing in health information management, acquired The Coding Center LLC to form a new entity operating as HIM Connections LLC. The Coding Center, a division of Doozer Software Inc., is a specialty outsourced remote coding services company. Both companies are based in Birmingham, Ala., and provide clinical coding and HIM services.

The deal closed in April and terms were not disclosed.
