Healthcare staffing to be $10.9 billion market in 2015

Growth is accelerating in the U.S. healthcare staffing industry this year and next after it decelerated in 2013, Staffing Industry Analysts’ President Barry Asin announced last week at the annual Healthcare Staffing Summit in Dallas. Temporary healthcare staffing revenue is projected to rise 5 percent this year and 7 percent next year to reach a market size of $10.9 billion.

The growth rates are lower than a forecast earlier this year which projected growth of 6 percent this year and 8 percent next year. However, growth remains above 2013's level of 3 percent. Revenue growth decelerated that year after growth of 8 percent in 2012.

  • Allied healthcare temporary staffing actually posted a decline of 3 percent in 2013. However, the segment is forecast to grow 3 percent this year and 7 percent next year.
  • Some of the strongest growth is in locum tenens revenue — forecast to rise 8 percent this year and 8 percent next year.
  • Travel nursing revenue is forecast to grow 5 percent his year and 8 percent next year.

Staffing Industry Analysts projects healthcare to outperform other segments of staffing through 2022.

The forecast was first announced at the Healthcare Staffing Summit last week. The event drew more than 430 people to Dallas. Topics covered included VMS/MSP, the Affordable Care Act, nursing and more.
