The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) through its economic blueprint Jobs, Upliftment, Investment, Capital and Ecology (JUICE) wants to create full employment in the country, Finance Minister and party secretary general, Tendai Biti has said.
Mr Biti, in a speech at the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) organised Workers' Day held at Gwanzura Stadium in Harare on Wednesday, said the unemployment figures in the country stood at 85%.
"85 per cent of the people are unemployed. Companies should reopen. We want full employment that is why as the MDC we have JUICE as the solution to the country's unemployment. We want to create a minimum of a million jobs," Biti said.
He castigated the Zanu PF indigenisation and empowerment drive as elitist as it will benefit only a few politically connected individuals. "We should not speak on sovereignty when the people are hungry. Job creation and food on the table are the true sovereignty. We want the rule of law. We do not want personal agendas when we are living in abject poverty”.
"That is why we come up with one demand - employment as we will not benefit from indigenisation and empowerment as it is not for the people to have money in their pockets but to enrich a few. There is no development without jobs…. We demand decent jobs and we are embarking on a jobs campaign as we need protection even in the informal sector " said the ZCTU President, George Nkiwane.
In March Zimbabwe's people endorsed a new constitution in a referendum, paving the way for elections which are due to take place later this year.
