Earlier this month, Steve Shepherd, a Ciett board member and regional representative for South Asia, and Junya Suzuki, of the Ciett South-Asia taskforce, met with representatives of various Malaysian staffing agencies for a capacity building workshop. During this workshop, the first important steps were taken towards the establishment of the Professional Staffing Association of Malaysia (PSAM).
In the weeks following the meeting, all Malaysian private employment services companies have been invited to be a part of this new national association, provided they adhere to certain quality standards, including the Ciett Code of Conduct.
This means accepting the principles of prohibiting the charging of fees to job-seekers, respecting the law, ensuring transparency, committing to safety at work, respecting diversity, and respecting for fair competition.
Other important aspects are: non-discrimination against agency workers, providing access to training, not replacing striking workers with agency workers, and promoting social dialogue as an appropriate way to organise the industry.
The setting of quality standards is an important reason for Ciett to support the establishment of national federations.
