A recent survey conducted by online job board Bayt.com and YouGov, a research and consulting organisation, entitled ‘Top Industries in the Middle East and North Africa’, has shown that male respondents throughout the region favour employment in the Banking & Finance sector or the Oil, Gas & Petrochemical industry.
In Lebanon respondents consider the Banking & Finance sector to be the most preferable for employment, as it demonstrates the most growth potential; while women are predominantly interested in Banking & Finance.
Jordanian respondents also consider the Banking & Finance sector to be the most preferable for employment. IT and Telecom careers are also highly sought after and show the most promising growth, while women are predominantly interested in education and academia.
The Oil, Gas & Petrochemical industry remains the most preferable employment sector for men in Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Throughout the region, the industry provides the best salary packages, a good work/life balance, and the best potential for career growth.
Women throughout the region provided more mixed responses. In no country was the Oil, Gas & Petrochemical industry the most attractive employment option, although this can conceivably be attributed to social pressures within the region restricting female employment opportunities.
Women in the UAE and Oman found employment in the Banking & Finance sector to be their preferred option. In Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, health-care related work was most preferred. Female workers in Qatar were predominately interested in Education and Academia, while women in Egypt most want to work in Media.
