India – Job market picks up in October

Hiring activities grew across most sectors during October, according to the Job Speak Index from job board Naukri.com. The Index, which tracks monthly hiring activities online, reported that recruitment in the country increased by +4% in October compared to September.

Regionally, Bangalore reported the greatest improvement in hiring trends with a +7% increase in October, followed by Hyderabad with growth of +6%. The National Capital region (Delhi-NCR) and Mumbai saw increases of +3% in October, while hiring in Chennai rose by +2%.

According to the report, monthly comparisons show that Pune experienced no  growth, month-on-month, while Kolkata was down by -7% in October 2013, as compared to September 2013, primarily due to the festive season.

The oil & gas sector reported monthly growth of +30%, while the insurance sector registered an increase of +25% compared to September. This was followed by telecom, BPO and pharmaceutical sectors, which reported increases of +20%, +11%, and +7%, respectively.

In contrast, recruitment activities in media & entertainment and construction & engineering reported declines of -7% and -6% compared with last month.

Ambarish Raghuvanshi, Group President Finance and CFO of Info Edge (India), commented: "The current economic situation has started showing signs of recovery and this sentiment is getting echoed in the hiring pattern of the companies.”
