India – Demand rising for temporary workers

12 September 2013

Companies working in e-commerce, retail, hospitality, and healthcare are increasingly turning to temporary staff for a variety of projects, according to dnaindia.com. Candidates in return can work with big firms on projects for between 18 and 24 months, earn money, and gain some much needed job experience.

Experts say that companies are hiring both graduates and under-graduates to work as attendants, for roles such as data-entry, customer care, front-office functions, warehousing, technical support, and logistics.

Sangeet Lala, senior vice president at Koramangala-based staffing firm TeamLease Services, commented: “Individuals can get the exposure and experience of working with big companies, which in bleak scenarios like these, appear tough.”

Rituparna Chakraborty, vice president of the Indian Staffing Federation, added: “Moreover, with almost every company looking for candidates with prior work experience, temping is a good option for freshers, or those in a 0-3 years’ experience bracket.”

“Temping is a stepping stone to a regular job. Often the companies temps work for absorbs them later on” added Chakraborty.

Sangeet Lala continued: “The main criterion firms look for in their temp candidates is some basic communication and computer skills. So people who are graduates in any stream, as well as those still studying, can apply.”
