India – Companies ramp up recruitment

16 April 2013

Companies in India are positive about hiring in the coming months, according to a new employment outlook report by staffing firm TeamLease. This forecasts a +4% rise in the employment outlook index for April to September, when compared to the previous six months.

The survey, which questioned over 600 companies, was carried out across eight cities. Hiring intentions were up in a number of cities, including Bangalore where 77% of firms intend to hire in the next six months. 70% of those in Mumbai plan to recruit more staff. In Delhi, 66% of companies want to increase their staff while in Pune 66% plan to recruit. But hiring intentions dropped in other cities such as Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Chennai.

Sangeeta Lala from TeamLease Services said: “It is surprising that despite the economic downturn, the job market this half year shows a positive outlook in almost all the major sectors. Tier II cities [cities with 1 million populations] are emerging as hiring grounds for cost effective talent, giving the mid-level companies an opportunity to boost their employee base.”

Recruitment activities are expected to be high in the ITES (information technology enables services), retail and fast-moving consumer good (FMCG) sectors. This is followed by healthcare & pharma and IT.  Infrastructure and manufacturing are expected to see a drop in hiring.
