Silicon Valley-based online staffing firm oDesk is reported to be considering establishing a base in Australia as it ramps up its local operations to tackle rival firm Freelancer.com, reports The Australian.
oDesk’s Vice President of its International Division, Matt Cooper, said that Australia was now the company’s second-largest market globally, with more than 50,000 registered clients and that it had twice the penetration rate in Australia compared with its home market of the US.
He commented: “We expect the growth here to continue. As we have put in more dedicated efforts internationally, Australia is our top priority in terms of markets, because it has been so successful for us and we do think we have barely scratched the surface.”
Mr Cooper has made two visits to Australia in the past three months and said it would be logical for the group to establish an Australian base in the future.
“We don’t have any specific plans to comment on at this point, but it would make sense for us to be a lot more visible going forward, so it is something we are contemplating. We have been able to accomplish an awful lot remotely but as you are trying to grow a market and with a model that is an early adopter in the space, it helps to have some evangelists of the ground, so that’s why long term it would make sense for us to have a representation here,” Mr Cooper added.
