Australia – ICT contractors see higher pay rates

08 April 2013

The latest SkillsMatch Contractor Rates Trend Analysis by ITCRA (Information Technology Contract and Recruitment Association) mirrors a number of trends that hourly pay rates for ICT contractors appear to have found a floor.

“This stabilisation appears, at first glance, to have come at the expense of contract duration with core roles such as project management benefitting from longer contracts while almost all other roles are now short-term,” said ITCRA CEO, Julie Mills.

“Contracts of less than one year in duration account for 94% of all initial agreements and this has increased from 90% six months ago with a negligible number of contracts of two years or longer. The greatest numbers of contracts over 24 months were issued for Business Intelligence Consultants but these still only accounted for two per cent.”

The latest data for September 2012 to February 2013 shows that the lower volume of contracts with a few high rates pushed December’s average hourly rate to an unusual high.

Average hourly rates for the six-month period reached AUD 88.75, seeing a high of AUD 108.02 in December and a low of AUD 79.89 in January. The highest average rates were achieved by Business Intelligence Consultants in December and the lowest for Helpdesk in November, while Network Designers showed the greatest variance.

Roles in strong demand are Desktop/Network Support, Business Intelligence Consultants and Project Managers; while the weakest demand was for Account Managers, Systems Analysts and Communications Managers.

ITCRA is an association for ICT contract and recruitment companies in Australia and New Zealand.
