The number of jobs advertised in Australia in December 2013 continued to fall, albeit at a slower pace, according to the latest figures from the ANZ’s job advertisement survey. Since the start of 2013, the number of jobs advertised online and in newspapers fell by -9%.
During December 2013, the number of jobs advertised online fell by -0.7% compared with the previous month, while the number of newspaper advertisements rose by +0.4%, however these account for less than 5% of all jobs advertised.
Justin Fabo, Head of Australian Economics, Corporate & Commercial at ANZ, commented: “Overall labour demand appears to be stabilising or even improving modestly. A number of different measures of job ads/vacancies have been broadly flat since mid-2013. This is consistent with the unemployment rate remaining relatively stable at around 5.75% in the near term, a level it has been at since mid-2013. However, there remains considerable uncertainty surrounding the labour market outlook beyond this, given our expectation to a sharp decline in resources investment from mid-year.”
“In addition, there have been some further signs of a pick-up in activity in the non-mining sectors of the economy, which bodes well for the transition for the economy from mining to non-mining sources of growth. Job ads in New South Wales, the most populous state and one less dependent on mining activity, have been trending modestly higher over the past six months,” he added.
Job adverts in Western Australia and the Northern Territory have improved in trend terms, following some significant weakness of the past two years, particularly in WA, as mining activity was moderated. Job advertising trends for Victoria have been mixed but the rate of deterioration in advertising has slowed. Other non-mining states are also showing signs of some stabilisation in jobs advertising overall.
