    India-based IT services giant Wipro Ltd. (NYSE: WIT) today reported revenue fell by 4.2% year over year in its fiscal fourth quarter ended March 31. Revenue totaled $2.67 billion in US dollars during the period.Wipro’s fourth-quarter revenue beat analysts’ expectation of $2.65 billion, Reuters reported.Fiscal 2024 “proved to be a challenging year for our industry, and the macroeconomic environment remains uncertain.     Specialized global workforce consulting firm QuantumWork Advisory acquired Talent Tech Labs, a research and advisory firm focused on talent acquisition technology. QuantumWork Advisory is part of Allegis Group, which ranks as the largest staffing firm in the US based on revenue.   • North Dakota posts lowest jobless rate in March

    North Dakota posted the lowest jobless rate among all US states in March at 2.0%, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. South Dakota and Vermont followed closely at 2.1% and 2.2%, respectively.Conversely, California posted the highest unemployment rate among all states in March at 5.3%, followed by the District of Columbia at 5.2%.  In total, 23 states had unemployment rates lower than the US figure of 3.8%, five states and DC had higher rates, and 22 states had rates that were not appreciably different from the national figure.Massachusetts was the only state to record a year-over-year decrease in its jobless rate in March, down 0.6 percentage point to 2.9%.On the flip side, the largest year-over-year unemployment rate increases occurred in Rhode Island, up 1.3 perce …

  • A third of US hiring managers admit to asking illegal questions intentionally during hiring process

    Hiring managers often overstep boundaries during their hiring process by asking about protected information such as age, identity, disabilities or family matters, according to a survey released by ResumeBuilder.com.About 32% of US hiring managers acknowledged posing these illegal questions intentionally. This includes 13% that do so frequently or often, 8% sometimes and 11% rarely. On the other hand, 69% of hiring managers claim they never ask illegal questions. The most prevalent illegal inquiries include citizenship status, native language, race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, marital status, parental status, family history and pregnancy.   • Cap reached for additional H-2B visas for early second half of fiscal year

    The US has reached enough petitions for H-2B visas to reach the cap for the additional 19,000 made available for returning workers for the early second half of fiscal year 2024, US Citizenship and Immigration Services announced April 18.  The visas go to temporary nonagricultural workers with start dates from April 1 to May 14, 2024. Companies using H-2B visas include those in hospitality, tourism, landscaping and seafood processing. USCIS is still accepting petitions for H-2B nonimmigrant workers for the additional 20,000 visas allotted for nationals of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti, Colombia, Ecuador and Costa Rica who are exempt from the returning worker requirement as well as those who are exempt from the congressionally mandated cap. Petitions for wo …

  • ManpowerGroup revenue down 5.5% in Q1

    ManpowerGroup Inc. (NYSE: MAN) said labour employers in North America and Europe remain cautious as it announced its first-quarter results yesterday. Revenue at the Milwaukee-based global staffing firm fell 5.5% year over year in constant currency (cc) to $4.40 billion.Earnings per share beat analysts’ expectations as did the company’s Q2 2024 forecast. Normalized EPS amounted to $0.94, 2.2% ahead of consensus estimates driven by significant decreases in operating expenses.   • Government to set out due diligence to regulate umbrella companies

    The UK government is looking into a statutory due diligence scheme for umbrella company use with the aim of tackling non-compliance in the industry. HMRC will publish new guidance later this year, including an online pay-checking tool to help umbrella company workers check whether the correct deductions are being made from their pay.According to the government, the goal is to support workers and businesses that use umbrella companies.“The government remains concerned about the scale of non-compliance in the umbrella company market, and the detrimental impact that this has on workers, taxpayers and the labour market,” it stated. “Last summer, the government consulted on options to reduce tax non-compliance in the market and will publish a response to its consultation in due course.”The …

  • UK workers want their employers to invest in sustainability

    Half of employees in the UK (51%) are keen to see their company invest more in sustainability, rising to 61% of younger workers aged 18-34, according to new research from employee benefits technology company Zest.The research also found that 53% would like to see their company investing in more sustainable benefits such as electric vehicles and sustainable pensions, similarly rising to two-thirds (66%) of 18–34 year olds.Meanwhile, 44% of businesses report an increase in the number of employees asking for sustainable benefits, and over half (53%) say that they have noticed an increase in the employees who care about sustainability over the last year.While half (50%) of young workers (18-34) now say that sustainable benefits are the most important perks to them, a third (33%) of this age gr …

    UK employers will no longer be able to discipline their staff for taking part in legal strike action after a UK Supreme Court ruled yesterday that the UK breached its duties over the right to take part in lawful strikes.Employees who are dismissed for taking part in lawful strike action have some statutory remedies for unfair dismissal; however, there is no express statutory (or other) protection in domestic law against action taken by an employer short of dismissal for participation in lawful strike action.The question in the appeal case is whether section 146 of.   • OECD employment rate stable in Q4

    The employment and labour force participation rates in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development remained broadly stable quarter-on-quarter. The employment rate was 70.1%  while the labour force participation rate was 73.8% in the fourth quarter of 2023, the highest levels recorded since either series started.Both indicators were at or near their record highs in 10 of the 38 OECD countries, including Italy and Japan, the OECD noted.When compared to the prior year period, the OECD employment rate rose by 0.2%. At the same time, the labour force participation rate rose by 0.5%.In the fourth quarter of 2023, the employment rate exceeded 70% in almost two-thirds of OECD countries, including Canada, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US.     Hong Kong’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.0% in the period from January – March 2024, down slightly from 3.1% during the same period a year ago, according to the latest labour force statistics published by the Census and Statistics Department.Compared to the previous three-month period, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 2.9% in the period of December 2023 to February 2024 to 3.0% in January to March 2024.Comparing the period of January to March 2024 with December 2023 to February 2024, the unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) increased across almost all the major economic sectors, with more distinct increases observed in the foundation and superstructure sector; retail, accommodation and food services sector; and professional and b …

    China has launched a three-year action plan to nurture and attract digital talent and workers in its tilt towards an innovation-driven economy, reports the South China Morning Post, citing a Chinese government circular.     Event: The March Employment Situation, released today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), indicates that total nonfarm employment rose by +303,000 in March on a seasonally adjusted basis, while temporary help services employment declined by -1,300 jobs. The temporary agency penetration rate was 1.74% in, down from a revised February rate of 1.75%. The national unemployment rate declined to 3.8%, from 3.9%.Employment expanded in most industry groups. The group with the largest gain was again Health and social assistance, which added +81,300 jobs; followed by Government, which added +71,000 jobs; and Leisure and hospitality, which added 49,000 jobs.     Key Findings: We forecast the US Staffing Industry will decline 3% in 2024 to reach a size of $184.6 billion, as the industry continues to pull back from prior peak levels. If we exclude the nurse staffing segments (that continue to normalize down steeply from pandemic levels), the remaining staffing industry is expected to be roughly flat this year, in aggregate. We forecast industrial staffing to decrease 5% in 2024 while office/clerical holds stable. We project IT staffing to decline 3% and healthcare staffing to decrease 11%, as both pull back from prior peak levels.     Staff satisfaction is the key to retention. Among staff giving their firm a net promoter “likelihood to recommend” satisfaction score of 0-4, the share saying they were open to quitting was 100%; that share declined with subsequent score increments, and above a score of 7 the share open to quitting was less than 10%. What drives staff satisfaction? Staff repeatedly emphasize two factors. In multiple survey questions respondents indicate that quality of senior leadership and work environment/culture are top drivers of job satisfaction.     About half of UK internal staff said they had used AI in their staffing job over the last year. Of those staff that had used AI in the last year, 33% rated it very helpful; 53% rated it moderately helpful; and 14% rated it not very helpful. Internal staff listed seven tasks for which they were using AI: writing emails and texts; writing job descriptions and job postings; resume writing and editing; research, ideas, and brainstorming; search strings; marketing, market research, and content creation; and sourcing/recruiting.   • UK Internal Staff Survey 2024: Internal staff training: what staff want and importance of explaining resources available

    Importance of communicating to staff the types of training resources available. Among UK internal staff who said they had been walked through the training resources offered by their company, 90% said they subsequently used the training and found it helpful. However, among internal staff who had not been walked through the available training, only 44% said they had used it and that it had helped; another 52% didn’t use it at all; and 4% used it but didn’t find it helpful. Two types of training scored the most widespread interest. These are: “management/leadership training,” and “sales/marketing tactics.” Six additional categories of training scored lighter but also widespread interest.
