Confidence among IT workers hits record high

The Randstad Technologies IT employee confidence index rose to a reading of 61.7 in the third quarter from a second-quarter reading of 58.7. The index measures IT workers’ confidence in their personal employment situation and optimism in the economic environment, and the third-quarter reading is the highest level ever recorded in the index’s nine-year history.

“Employers must keep in mind that with more confidence in the job market comes more likelihood of job mobility, a challenge when many organizations are already struggling with finding the right IT talent to drive business goals and innovation,” said Bob Dickey, group president, technology and engineering at Randstad. “In fact, a recent Gartner report on CIO Agenda 2014/2015, finds 51 percent of CIOs are concerned that the digital torrent is coming faster than they can cope, and 42 percent don’t feel they have the right skills and capabilities in place to face this future.”

Forty percent of IT workers said they are likely to look for a new job in the next year, up from 29 percent in the second quarter. Although 38 percent believe fewer jobs are available, 56 percent are confident in their ability to find them, up from 51 percent in the second quarter.

Technology professionals’ confidence in the overall economy increased by 5 percentage points this quarter, with 52.4 percent believing the economy is getting stronger — the highest level among all other professions surveyed.

Randstad’s survey was conducted online by Harris Poll and included 189 adult IT workers in the US. It was conducted in July, August and September of 2014.
