US posts April increase in IT jobs, settles into pattern

The number of U.S. information technology jobs rose by 0.28 percent month over month in April to approximately 4.6 million, the TechServe Alliance reported. The number was up 2.6 percent on a year-over-year basis.

In addition, the number of engineering jobs in the U.S. rose 0.18 percent month over month in April to almost 2.5 million. The number was up 1.74 percent on a year-over-year basis.

“After some sideways movement last year, it seems IT employment growth has settled into a pattern of consistent month-over-month growth. On the engineering side, we saw a modest uptick in the growth rate in April,” said TechServe Alliance CEO Mark Roberts.

“Given we were able to add IT and engineering jobs in Q1 with GDP essentially flat, I am optimistic we will continue to see increasing IT and engineering job growth as the economy picks up steam in Q2 and Q3," Roberts said. "My unabashedly bullish perspective is only tempered by my concern over the inadequate supply of talent in high-demand skill sets — a challenge for which there appears to be no easy remedy in the near term.”

The TechServe Alliance is a trade association of the IT and engineering staffing and solutions industry.
