CIO poll: Mobile, big data demand jumps

Mobile solutions and big data are among the skills experiencing the fastest increase in demand among CIOs across the globe, according to a CIO survey by information technology services firm Harvey Nash. Demand for mobile skills has risen 11 percent this year compared to two years ago. And the need for big data skills wasn’t tracked by previous studies, but a quarter of CIOs demanded such skills this year.

The CIO survey delved into numerous other areas as well, gathering data from CIOs at firms across the world. Among its findings:

  • 45 percent of CIOs are affected by a skill shortage, down from 48 percent in 2012 and 71 percent back in 2008.
  • 90 percent of CIOs are concerned about retention of staff.
  • The percentage of CIOs that have a flexible workforce that makes up a quarter or more of their total workforce rose this year to 28 percent of CIOs from 24 percent in 2011.
  • 27 percent of CIOs plan to switch jobs within 12 months, up from 23 percent who said the same in 2011 and 25 percent in 2012.
  • Just 3 percent of CIOs spend more than half their IT budget on outsourced activity.
