IT hiring plans are down, TEKsystems survey finds

A new TEKsystems survey found fewer IT leaders plan to increase both traditional and contingent hiring this year compared to similar surveys earlier this year.

TEKsystems’ quarterly “reality check” survey of 240 IT leaders in June found 29% planned to increases temporary hiring. That’s down from 51% in a similar survey in March and 36% in a survey at the beginning of the year.

On other hand, 56% of IT leaders planned to keep temporary hiring the same when asked in June, up from 44% in March and 54% at the start of the year.

And more IT leaders planned to decrease temporary staff, 15%, in the June survey compared to 5% in March and 10% at the start of the year.

Plans for increases in hiring of traditional full-time workers fell to 28% in June from 45% in March and 40% at the start of the year.

“Hiring seems to have hit a summertime lull, as fewer leaders expect hiring to increase in the third quarter after a significant uptick at the end of March,” said TEKsystems Research Manager Jason Hayman.

Other findings in the survey include: The percentage of IT leaders that expect budget increases at the end of June stood at a yearly high of 50%. The percentage of IT leaders that express confidence in their department’s ability to satisfy business demands was also at a yearly high of 74% in June. Security, mobility, cloud computing and business intelligence/big data have ranked in the top five initiatives with the largest impact on organizations throughout the entire year. Security professionals, programmers and developers, software engineers and project managers remained in the top five most difficult positions to fill throughout the entire year.
